The Giant Gas Planet Jupiter

jupiterPic1.jpg
A View of Jupiter
Jupiter is the fith plaent in the solar system.
Its made out of gas mosly and has mostly no solid surface.
Jupiter is one of the four planets called"Jovain Planets.Saturan,Uranus, and Neptune are also Jovain Planets which means gas planets. The four gas planets contains high velocity winds which are confined in wide bands of latitude. The Gas Planets contains 71% of hydrogen,27% of helium, and 2% of water, ammonia, methane, rock.Jupiter's atmosphere is about 90% hydrogen,10% helium, 2% of water, ammonia, methane, and rock.Jupiter also has a special spot called"The Great Red Spot",a giant storm that is known to have existed since at least the 17th century when it was first seen by telescope. All the Jovains Planets have rings but Jupiter has one too,its just faint color ring really hard to see.Jupiter also has at least 63 moons, including the four large moons called the Galilean moons that were first discovered by Galileo Galilei in 1610.
Jupiters main moons are,Io,Europe,Ganymede,Callisto.

Jupiters Moons

Jupiter's moons

Jupiter Has 4 main moons are called Galilean Moons. The first moon is io.The second is Europa. The third is Ganymede. And the Fouth is Callisto.

If Ganymede were not bound to Jupiter, it would be considered a planet in its own right. It is actually bigger than Mercury. being 390 km (234 miles) larger in diameter. It has heavily cratered dark regions, with lighter expanses in-between. Geologists think that it used to have plates, like the Earth, but they froze together soon after Ganymede's birth

Callisto, the outermost of the Galilean moons, is almost an exact twin of Mercury in size and appearance. Every square mile is covered with craters or other signs of bombardment. Other than that, there are no distinct characteristics

Europa, closer to Jupiter than Ganymede, is the smoothest natural body in the solar system. It resembles a billiard ball until seen very close-up. At that distance you can start to see dark, deep, and narrow cracks. In scale, though, the relief is no bigger than a line on a billiard ball made with a felt-tipped marker. Geologists think that Europa has liquid water underneath the icy surface - and possibly life.

Io, closer yet, is commonly compared to a pizza. Its volcanoes make it the most active world in the solar system. They spew out the sulfuric acid that gives Io its many colors. They also make Io one of the only three moons with an atmosphere in the solar system

The Giant Red spot

jupiterredspot.jpg
Jupiter Has a gaint red spot is bigger then the earth. Its a storm akin to a hurricane.Jupiter's Southern hemisphere, the rotation is counterclockwise, with a period of about 6 days. (A hurricane in Earth's Southern hemisphere rotates clockwise , because it is a low pressure system.) The clouds associated with the Spot, appearto be about 8 km above neighboring cloud tops. The spot was found on February 25, 1979,when the spacecraft was 9.2 million km (5.7 million mi) from Jupiter. The oval object rotates counterclockwise, with a period of about six days. The Great Red Spot's dimensions are 24–40,000 km × 12–14,000 km. It is large enough to contain two or three planets of Earth's diameter. The maximum altitude of this storm is about 8 km above the surrounding cloudtops.Storms such as this are common, jupiter also has white ovals and brown ovals, which are lesser unnamed storms. White ovals tend to consist of relatively cool clouds within the upper atmosphere. Brown ovals are warmer and located within the "normal cloud layer". Such storms can last as little as a few hours or stretch on for centuries. a storm, there was strong evidence that the spot could not be associated with any deeper feature on the planet's surface, as the Spot rotates differentially with respect to the rest of the atmosphere, sometimes faster and sometimes more slowly.

Jupiter's Surface

Jupiter's surface is a sea of yellowish cloud tops that roil with winds continually circling the great planet. The gales whip around the equator at double our hurricane speeds (340 mph, 550 km/h). It's windy here, and cold. The temperature on the surface is about -235 degrees F (-150 C), which is twice as cold as the coldest spot in Antarctica.
Surface clouds form alternating bands of color, which speed in opposite directions, like passing trains. Yellow bands are the tops of great convective bubbles buoyed by a gas and liquid-hydrogen 'soup' heated by Jupiter's 36,000-degree F (20 000 C) core. Reddish brown bands are lower cloud layers that ride descending convective currents. Yellow-band clouds blow easterly and red-band ones whip across the planet westerly. Fierce tornados rage between bands.
Why is Jupiters surface(atmosphere) is so thin?We can't land here on Jupiter's surface, since it's a sea of cloud tops, but we can get warmer by descending. Buffeted by extreme winds, we descend, and the pressure mounts. The winds don't subside. They continue to blow about 450 mph (725 km/h) all the way down the atmosphere (at least as far as we've probed). Lightning flashes in the distance, as we dip below the upper cloud base.

The Core of Jupiter

Jupiter is one of the Gas Giants. you're really looking at a thick layer of 90% hydrogen and 10% helium,2% of water, rock, ammonia, methane, that completely cover the planet. If we would really want to try to see Jupiter's surface, we'd have to send something through all those clouds which are a few thousand kilometers deep. But if we did send something it would be gone by the time it gets near the surface.Jupiter, itself, is made up of liquid hydrogen, on the "surface." Below this is liquid metallic hydrogen. There's none of this on the earth! The center is a big chunk of ice and rock.
